When your kids come to our office, we can offer children’s dentistry to help improve oral health and offer stronger smiles. We have preventive treatments to help them fight cavities and other issues. In today’s blog, your Charles City, IA, dentist talks about how we approach children’s dentistry.
Starting with Your Child’s Checkup and Cleaning
Whether your children have never been to the dentist’s office, or if a long time has passed, we start with a checkup visit. During the dental exam, we employ advanced technology and our years of experience to conduct a detailed look at teeth, gums, and roots, as well as other areas of the smile. Our team wants to identify any issues in the early stages, before your child develops painful cavities or infections that could threaten smile stability. If we find an issue, we will create a treatment plan to address it. In the same visit, we will protect the smile from cavities and gingivitis with a dental cleaning, in which we remove all plaque and tartar with an ultrasonic scaling device and a manual tool. We also take time to talk to your kid about their smiles and how to keep them healthy and strong from home!
Fluoride Treatment
We also offer unique preventive treatments designed to help lower the risk of tooth decay. For example, during each of your child’s checkup visits, we will apply fluoride directly to the teeth in a varnish form. The process takes seconds and kids just need to avoid food and drink for about 30 minutes. The mineral then strengthens the smile, even the weakened portions, to help lower the risk of cavities. We also recommend a fluoride toothpaste for your kids too, with those three and younger using a rice-sized blot, and kids over then three using a pea-sized blot.
Dental Sealants
Even if kids take time to brush and floss their teeth every day, they may not be able to reach the rear molars. Which means food and drink particles can remain trapped between them, increasing the risk of cavities. But with dental sealants, we apply an acrylic coating to the rear teeth, so food and drink particles cannot remain lodged there, lowering the risk of tooth decay. Application takes only seconds and they can stay in place for up to ten years!
