In our previous blog, we talked about how dental bridges helped patients with between one and three lost teeth in a row. But what if you have a more substantial case of tooth loss, what if you’ve lost several teeth or even a majority of them? For Charles City, IA, patients with severe tooth loss, a complete or partial denture may be necessary.
What Causes Advanced Tooth Loss?
People may lose their natural teeth due to injury or even untreated tooth decay or dental infection. However, the most common cause is periodontitis. The advanced stage of gum disease, periodontitis actually destroys the tissues that connect your teeth and jaw, leading to natural teeth becoming loose and falling out. When we lose our natural teeth, this impacts our ability to eat and speak, and may cause misalignment. Addressing your missing teeth helps you enjoy better oral health and a more natural appearance.
Partial Dentures
A partial denture addresses substantial tooth loss for patients that don’t yet need a full prosthetic. We begin by taking detailed impressions of the smile, which we use to design and create the dentures. We craft them with lifelike materials to ensure a natural appearance. The prosthetic contains lifelike teeth set in an acrylic base that is designed to mimic the appearance of gum tissue. Metal clasps will attach to the surrounding natural teeth and anchor the denture in place. With proper care and attention, your partial could last between 5 and 10 years before requiring replacement.
Complete Prosthetics
As you may assume, a complete prosthetic replaces every missing tooth on one or both of your arches. Again, we employ detailed dental impressions to design them, and we fabricate them using natural looking materials. Your set of new teeth will again be made using materials designed to ensure a lifelike appearance, and the base will again be made to match gum tissue. Natural suction will hold them in place, and you may also use a special adhesive. They can be removed for soaking and cleaning, and usually last about 5 to 10 years. If you have any questions about either of our dental prosthetics, or about addressing your tooth loss, then contact our team today.
