When you suffer minor tooth loss, such as one to three teeth in a row, then you may experience serious complications. However, to avoid these complications and return smiles to full function and appearance, then you may need a prosthetic, such as a dental bridge. How do we use bridges to address tooth loss, and what makes them so lifelike?
How Do Bridges Look Natural?
We create them from strong materials, such a ceramic, which can absorb bite forces and withstand serious pressure. However, the material also contains stain-resistant properties and is translucent, much like tooth enamel. Which means when we shade them to match the color of your teeth, they blend seamlessly. Each set is custom-made specifically for our patients’ smiles. We remove structure from the teeth one either side of the gap in the smile, and then take detailed impressions. We use the impressions to design and craft the prosthetic from lifelike materials. A bridge consists of the new teeth, known as pontics, with crowns on each end. Once complete, we place the crowns on the either end of the gap, securing the new ones firmly in place.
When Do I Need One?
Even if you’ve only lost a single tooth, you benefit from a prosthetic. For example, did you know that a gap in your smile could cause surrounding teeth to drift from position, leading to misalignment? Poor alignment alone is linked to a higher risk of tooth decay and gum disease! In addition, missing teeth could strain the jaw joints and upset bite balance, leading to painful disorders such as TMD or bruxism (teeth grinding). Addressing the gap ensures your smile remains whole, comfortable, and healthy!
What Benefits Will They Offer?
First off, they will look natural and blend with your smile, so no one will be able to tell you have a prosthetic. However, they can also last for many years. In fact, with proper care and attention, your prosthetic could last as long as 15 years. In addition, you will be able to once again eat your favorite foods and enjoy a tooth replacement option that never slips, since it is fixed in place. If you have any questions about the dental bridge or if you think one could address your missing tooth or teeth, then contact our team today. We would love to help up enjoy a full smile once again!
